Introduction
Charles Leclerc has taken a stunning victory at the 2024 Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix after utilising a bold one-stop strategy to hold onto the lead, the Monegasque thrilling the Tifosi as he clinched P1 ahead of the McLarens.

After making a decent start off the line from pole position, Lando Norris initially stayed in P1 before Oscar Piastri swept past into the second chicane later in the lap. From there, the Australian stayed out in front for much of the race.
However, with much of the field opting for a two-stop strategy, Ferrari decided to try a one-stop for Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, resulting in the pair running at the front of the field in the latter stages of the race.
Birthday boy Sainz could not hold on, given his ageing tyres, with both Piastri and Norris overtaking him to move into second and third. But Leclerc held out to grab an emotional win on Ferrari’s home soil, crossing the line 2.6s ahead of Piastri.
[bsa_pro_ad_space id=41]Norris claimed an extra point for setting the fastest lap as he took third, adding somewhat to a day where the Briton may have hoped for more to aid his championship bid. Sainz had to settle for fourth, while Lewis Hamilton – driving his last Monza race before switching to Ferrari next year – was fifth for Mercedes.
Max Verstappen placed sixth, and the Dutchman gained one position from his original grid slot. The Red Bull managed to stay ahead of Mercedes’ George Russell in seventh, while Sergio Perez added three points to Red Bull’s tally in eighth.
It was a joyous day for Williams as Alex Albon clinched two valuable points in P9, and Kevin Magnussen was 10th in the Haas on what was an eventful day for the team, with both of their drivers having received time penalties for separate incidents.
Fernando Alonso just missed out on the top 10 in P11 for Aston Martin, and Franco Colapinto crossed the line on his F1 debut in P12 for Williams. It was P13 for Daniel Ricciardo, the RB driver, having received two penalties in the race’s early stages.
Esteban Ocon led Alpine in 14th, putting him ahead of teammate Pierre Gasly in 15th, and Valtteri Bottas followed for Kick Sauber in 16th place.
Nico Hulkenberg ended the day down in P17 for Haas, Zhou Guanyu was 18th for Kick Sauber, and Lance Stroll was the last classified runner for Aston Martin in P19.
Yuki Tsunoda was the sole retiree from the race, having retired his RB following a collision with Hulkenberg.
Mario Isola, Motorsport Director, Pirelli:
It was a really exciting race followed by a fantastic show from the fans. The enthusiasm of the Monza crowd is incredible and contagious and gives one goosebumps. Congratulations to Charles Leclerc and Ferrari, as winning this Grand Prix must be an incredible feeling for them.
On the technical front, this was a Grand Prix that had it all: battles on track between the drivers with some spectacular overtaking moves, such as Piastri’s on Norris and a strategic confrontation between those who had opted to stop twice and those on a one-stop.
We said before the event that the one-stop would be the quickest, which proved correct. The fact that nearly all the teams had kept two sets of Hards for the race gave them the flexibility to go with different scenarios if necessary. One should remember that no one had sufficient data to fully evaluate the C3 performance on the utterly new track surface.
Management of graining was crucial and probably affected by the track evolution. Initial analysis of the data and the visual checks of the tyres at the end of each stint showed that graining was very significant in the first part of the race, especially on the front left, but less so on the left rear, with both the Hard and Medium, while in the following stints, the phenomenon was less present. A vital factor, therefore, was the drivers’ feeling during the race and their ability to manage the tyres, especially for those who stuck with the strategy they had opted for at the start, namely the one-stop.
The day on the track:
At the start, the majority (14) of the drivers went with the Medium. The Hards were chosen by the two Red Bulls, Lance Stroll (Aston Martin), Esteban Ocon (Alpine), Yuki Tsunoda (Racing Bulls) and Valtteri Bottas (Sauber). Yuki Tsunoda was the only driver not to make it to the chequered flag. Of the remaining 19, nine pitted once, ten did two or more (Stroll, three).
Daniel Ricciardo (Racing Bulls) ran the longest stint, completing 42 laps on the Hard. Esteban Ocon led the way on the Medium, running a 21-lap second stint on the C4.

Here are the team-by-team highlights:
Red Bull Racing
Max Verstappen battled to a sixth-place finish at the 2024 Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix to score eight crucial points and maintain a significant advantage in the championship standings with eight races remaining.
[bsa_pro_ad_space id=41]The Dutch driver now has a 62-point advantage over McLaren’s Lando Norris, who finished third in Monza. Meanwhile, Oracle Red Bull Racing teammate Sergio Pérez finished in eighth place to ensure the team retained their lead in the constructors’ championship by eight points over McLaren.
Max Verstappen, Driver, Red Bull Racing
Overall it was a tricky weekend in Monza both in qualifying and the race. In terms of position, we got the most out of today, there was a bad pit stop and we were also running down on power for most of the race but we just tried to do our own race.
“We could’ve executed a better strategy but in hindsight the two-stop was not optimal so it ended up being damage limitation until the end. There is a lot to analyse from this weekend. This is just how racing goes sometimes, we need to put our heads down and work as hard as we can to get back to where we want to be. I’ve given a lot of feedback on the car, so in the next two weeks before Baku we need to focus on turning things around and fixing some of the issues we’ve identified over the past few weekends.
Sergio Pérez, Driver, Red Bull Racing:
Since lap one of FP1 this weekend has been tricky and unfortunately, we just never got there. In the beginning today the balance was looking better on the hard and we were able to look after the tyre, but very early on we started to struggle with degradation, and it became hard to manage. On the final stint on the mediums, we did a long stint, and given the pace on that tyre, it was quite difficult to maximise things. My fight with George was just on the limit and we had a nice battle but the tyre wouldn’t work for us. We struggled with pace but more than that it was the balance, so we must work to pull it all together a bit more, between low speed and high speed. I am very confident the Team here at track and back at home have the solution, we have produced great cars in the past and there is no reason why we cannot get back on track. We have no questions now, we know the problem. Given it is all related to balance, if we can find a fix then we can switch it around but for now, it’s head down until we find the answer.
CHRISTIAN HORNER, CEO and Team Principal
Firstly, it’s a great result for Charles at home, so congratulations to him and to Ferrari. We couldn’t have made that one stop work for us today due to our tyre degradation, so for us we got the most of it that we could, and we leave here with a lot of work to do. Our strategy worked to a degree but then we started to get into graining ourselves, so the issues we had yesterday were there in the race again. I thought Max did a good job and did everything he could to get the most out of it and get sixth. Checo, likewise, drove a good race today and I think where we finished was the maximum we were going to get. Obviously, our performance is a concern right now and the whole Team is working very hard on it. It looks like a balance problem and there needs to be a fix for it, so the Team are working incredibly hard back at the factory to get on top of it. If nothing else, this weekend has really shown where some of our weaknesses are.
Scuderia Ferrari
Scuderia Ferrari HP won the Italian Grand Prix at Monza with a masterful job from the team and an exceptional performance from Charles Leclerc, who managed to make his Hard tyres last longer than anyone else, fending off the McLarens of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris all the way to the chequered flag.
[bsa_pro_ad_space id=41]The team picked up 37 points today, thanks also to a fourth place for Carlos Sainz, more than any other team, which puts it 39 points behind the leader. It is Ferrari’s 246th win, the third this season, the seventh for Leclerc, his second in Monza after his memorable 2019 victory. He is now third in the Drivers’ classification, while Carlos is fifth. As was the case last week in Zandvoort, the team executed its strategy very well and proved flexible when it came to taking a gamble to go with a one-stop when two seemed the most likely course. The decision to run with less aero downforce also proved correct, allowing the drivers to make the most of one of the SF-24’s strong points, namely its ability to be kind on its tyres. The rest was down to Leclerc, who once again proved his class, constantly improving and now an absolute master of tyre management.
The race. After the start, the Ferrari duo made the most of a mistake, from George Russell, in the first chicane to move up to third with Charles and fourth with Carlos. The Monegasque also immediately got the better of Lando Norris to go second after Oscar Piastri had attacked his team-mate aggressively at the Roggia chicane. The Medium tyres showed signs of degradation very early on on all the cars, and Charles’ pace dropped a bit, and he was undercut by Norris to be back in third place. Charles switched to the Hard on lap 15; from then on, his race took a different turn. He did a brilliant job of managing his tyres to go all the way to the flag, unlike the two McLarens that made a second stop. Back in the lead, the Monegasque held a consistent pace, which put him out of reach of Piastri and Norris, allowing him to take a well-deserved win, following on from that unforgettable Monaco victory back in May. Sainz, who turned 30 today, also had a very strong race, switching to Hards on lap 19 before he, too, went all the way to the flag with no further stops. However, both McLarens passed him in the closing stages, having helped Charles by fending off Piastri for a long two laps, when the McLaren couldn’t run at its actual pace.
A sea of red. As always with a Ferrari win, the crowd, a veritable sea of red – wasted no time invading the track on the main straight to start the party under the podium, cheering for the team, the drivers and the team principal, singing at the top of their voices. Tonight, we will enjoy a well-deserved celebration. The Championship resumes in a fortnight’s time on 13 September with the Azerbaijan Grand Prix at the Baku City Circuit, another of Charles’ favourite tracks.
Carlos Sainz #55
First, congratulations to Charles and the entire team, including those working in Maranello! I’m really happy for them and the tifosi; it’s a well-deserved win! It was a shame I couldn’t keep a podium position today. Staying out and extending the first stint made me lose some race time and the train of tows at the front. From there, it wasn’t easy to make up time, but the call to commit to a one-stop strategy was the right one, and overall, we should be happy that the car seemed to work better. Let’s see if we can keep up the good results in the upcoming races.
Charles Leclerc #16
What an incredible feeling. The first time I won in Monza in 2019 was so emotional for me and our team. I didn’t think winning here could ever feel like that again, but it did today. Seeing our Tifosi celebrating with us is fantastic, and I am so glad we could share this victory again. Monaco and Monza were the two races I have always wanted to win because they are so special to me. A huge thank you to everyone on our team who made this happen today. You have done an incredible job to make this dream a reality, and we can all be proud to have achieved this together. We had a perfectly executed strategy today and beat our competitors to it. We will give everything to keep this momentum for the rest of the season, taking any opportunity we have.
Frédéric Vasseur – Team Principal
What a mega result for the team! This is a real confidence booster for our Tifosi, who made the difference this weekend, and us. It was a perfect race where Charles drove incredibly well, and we thoroughly deserved this win. After qualifying, we were disappointed because we knew we had the potential to do very well. From the beginning of the season, we were probably in better shape on race pace than in qualifying, which is the case also today. Once again, the execution was perfect, and we could turn things around. Last year, tyre management was our biggest weakness, but now, it’s one of our advantages with this car. It was already the case last week in Zandvoort, and now we are consistent in terms of race pace to the point that we did think it might be a two-stop. Still, we saw very low degradation in the second stint and changed our strategy accordingly. Charles raced with control all the time. It was a risk, but sometimes you have to take risks, and today, it worked. We worked well as a team and knew that Carlos could help if we did a one-stop with the two cars. He also helped us with feedback on the tyres because it’s essential to have two opinions and two different sources of information, and we were quite relaxed on this front.
John Elkann, Ferrari Chairman
Winning on home turf in Monza is a unique feeling. This win is for all our fans who always support us and gave Charles that extra push over the final few laps today. Congratulations to the team united in their efforts to get everything right, making this Ferrari win possible.
Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team
Lewis Hamilton finished P5 and George Russell P7 in the 2024 Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix. George lined up P3 and Lewis P6 on the Medium tyre at the start.
[bsa_pro_ad_space id=41]A frantic opening lap saw George pick up front-wing damage, with Lewis also having contact, although not suffering any ill effects. That left Lewis running P5 and P7 at the end of the opening lap. From there, the focus was on understanding how to manage the tyres without suffering from graining. After boxing to the Hard compound, George took a new front wing, and both drivers evaluated the one-stop.
Ultimately, both switched to the two-stop after suffering from the aforementioned graining. Despite pushing hard, neither driver could improve their position and came home P5 and P7. That completes the first double-header of the second half of the season. In two weeks, the team’s attention now turns towards the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku.
George Russell
It was a frustrating day today. Ultimately, we didn’t have the pace to fight for the podium, but my race came undone at the first corner. It is disappointing when that happens after all the efforts the team put in over the weekend. I made a good start but got caught in the dirty air behind Piastri. I locked up to avoid him and picked up some front-wing damage. That compromised my opening stint, and we lost time in the pit stop, having to change the wing itself.
Our pace hasn’t been as strong as before the summer break here or in Zandvoort. As a team, we will go away, put the effort in, and find out why that is. Other teams seem to have taken a step forward, so we must work diligently to get back to terms with them.
Lewis Hamilton
We didn’t have the pace today to fight for more. The McLarens and the Ferrari, in particular, were strong. I managed to keep up with Sainz but couldn’t do the longer stint and one-stop he could. If we had started ahead of him, we might have been able to hold him off. Ultimately, we needed a better balance with the car today to achieve much more.
It’s a shame to come away from a weekend where we looked so strong without more to show. We looked good throughout practice and qualifying but couldn’t match that today. The field is so tight now, and seeing what happens over the coming races will be fascinating. We will keep working hard and hopefully have a stronger Baku race in two weeks.
Toto Wolff, Team Principal & CEO
Congratulations to Ferrari and Charles Leclerc on a well-deserved victory today. It is always a special moment when the scarlet red car wins here at Monza. Our own race was better than Zandvoort but still not good. We completed the two-stop strategy as we suffered from graining on the front left tyre, which made the one-stop unlikely. It was a difficult challenge to manage and hard to know whether to commit to the one-stop or push harder and go to the two-stop. Our pace today made it difficult to score much more than we did on either path, though.
We have not performed at the level we did before the summer shutdown in the last two races. When you don’t have the pace, strategy decisions are difficult, as we see today. We have time to analyse why that is now before Baku and aim to return stronger.
McLaren Racing
Hear from McLaren Formula 1 drivers Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri, and Team Principal Andrea Stella after the 2024 Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.
[bsa_pro_ad_space id=41]Lando and Oscar hold P1 and P2 through the first chicane. Oscar leads the second chicane, and Lando drops back to P3 behind Leclerc. Lando boxes for the Hard tyre on lap 14 coming out behind Ocon, but he quickly clears the Alpine. Leclerc responds to Lando’s pitting, but the undercut has been successful; position gained. Oscar pits on lap 16 for Hard tyres and comes out ahead of Lando. Sainz pits from the front, Oscar and Lando are now P3 and P4, with the two Red Bulls who have yet to pit ahead. Both Red Bulls pit, and it’s a Papaya 1-2 once more. Lando boxes for a fresh set of Hard tyres and is on his way again. Oscar follows suit and takes on another Hard tyre in P3 ahead of Verstappen and Lando. Lando moves ahead of Verstappen and into P4. Oscar quickly gets on Sainz’s gearbox before making the move into P2. Lando now moves ahead of Sainz and into P3. Leclerc is the first to see the chequered flag with Oscar and Lando in P2 and P3.
Lando Norris
A frustrating day on track. Ferrari drove a better race today, so hats off to them; they had a better car. Well done to Oscar, he did a good job getting past me, and deserved to finish ahead. We considered the one-stop race, but it wasn’t possible with the amount of graining I had. We knew it would be tight, and we were disappointed with the end result, but we’ll go again to Baku.
Oscar Piastri
There were some great points for the team, especially with Lando’s win, but it was a little bit disappointing on my side. I made some excellent progress, but I got stuck in the dirty air behind the Ferrari, which had more pace than we were expecting, so I couldn’t maximise the points on my side. However, we’ve got a quick car, so the next part of the season will be pretty fun.
I am looking forward to it.
Andrea Stella
A very close race with Ferrari. Leclerc was very quick today, and he won the race by executing a one-stop, while we felt that we needed to go on two stops to ensure we had enough tyres to make it to the end of the race. This meant that we couldn’t capitalise on our very strong position on the grid.
Apart from this, it’s been a very positive weekend in Monza. It confirmed that the car is strong and performs well on all kinds of circuits after the upgrades in Zandvoort, and we gained many points in the Constructors’ Championship and some points in the quest for Lando in the Drivers’ Championship. So, with this championship situation and the car’s performance, we look forward to an exciting final part of the season.
Aston Martin F1 Team
Following a tough weekend at the 2024 Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix, the final European race of the season, Fernando and Lance finished P11 and P19, respectively.
[bsa_pro_ad_space id=41]The drivers started the Italian Grand Prix on different tyre compounds – Fernando on the Medium and Lance on the Hard. After a good start, Fernando made up a position on the first lap to P10. Lance could also make up positions sitting in P15 by Lap 7. Fernando first made a pitstop on lap 13 for the Hard tyre, with Lance following at the end of lap 20 for another set of Hards. Fernando pitted again on lap 36, with Lance stopping for Mediums a lap later. Lance stopped for a third time on lap 51 for the Soft compound. At the chequered flag, Fernando just missed out on the final World Championship point by a tenth of a second, finishing P11. Lance classified P19.
Fernando Alonso
It was a difficult race today. We maximised the pace the best we could. I pushed the car to its limits, so I’m happy in that regard, but we struggled with the relative pace of the car while on track. We were in the points at the start of the race and were able to undercut [Alex] Albon, thinking all teams would execute a two-stop race.
It wasn’t enough at the end to recover from that extra pit stop. We were only 0.2 seconds behind [Kevin] Magnussen and a second behind Albon, so it is disappointing that we did not score any points today. We will keep pushing.
Lance Stroll
Today’s result was more or less what we expected. We haven’t had the pace to challenge all weekend, and we knew there wouldn’t be much we could do from P17. We went into the race open to a one or two-stop strategy, but elected to stop twice when we saw the levels of tyre degradation.
We then stopped for a third time at the end to try and take the fastest lap. Ultimately, we know we’re missing the performance we need, and the focus remains on bringing that to the car.
Mike Krack, Team Principal:
Looking at the cars finishing around us, it is tempting to say we could have tried a one-stop strategy, but we know our car is hard on tyres, and it was not an easy call today. We saw other teams facing the same difficult decision, too. Fernando was in the fight for points all afternoon and until the very last lap – chasing down Albon and Magnussen – but we just ran out of laps in the end.
We always knew it would be a tough race, and we need to find more performance to compete in this very tight midfield. We will keep our heads down to come back stronger in Baku.
Visa Cash App F1 Team
Visa Cash App RB driver Daniel Ricciardo was in the battle for the points but eventually had to settle for 13th place, while Japanese teammate Yuki Tsuonda could not finish the race at the 2024 Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.
[bsa_pro_ad_space id=41]Daniel Ricciardo
Ultimately, we weren’t quick enough today, even without the penalties. We tried, and I enjoyed the wheel-to-wheel racing at the start, but I made contact with Nico in turn eight. I spoke to him after the race. I thought we had space, but I felt the contact, so I didn’t give him enough room and apologised. It’s tough as you race hard, but the smallest margins make a difference. The car felt ok after, and we pushed as hard as possible with what we had. I was trying to get the maximum out of the car from Friday afternoon to today. Personally, I feel a lot better this weekend, and we were close to scoring points.
Yuki Tsunoda
I’m pretty frustrated today. It’s a shame that my race finished a few laps after the start due to a contact with Nico (Hulkenberg). I tried to leave as much space as possible, but it seemed he locked up, causing him to lose control and crash into me. Unfortunately, we had to retire the car as we got some damage on the floor. I felt it immediately and tried to continue, but the car slid around, and I couldn’t drive it. We have Baku and Singapore next, our car should perform well there, so hopefully we’ll have good weekends ahead.
Laurent Mekies – Team Principal
First, what a brilliant advert this weekend has been for Formula 1, with a packed crowd at an updated Monza circuit treated to what most of them wanted: a home team win. Our congratulations go to Ferrari and Charles Leclerc for an incredible drive. As for today’s race, one could say it was dictated by Hulkenberg, with Daniel given a five-second penalty, forcing him off the track before Nico drove into Yuki, leading to us retiring the car. The most frustrating aspect of Yuki’s retirement is that we lost 40 laps, which would have increased our understanding of the updates we introduced here. Daniel then received a further 10-second penalty because we didn’t execute the first one correctly. We must review our procedures in this scenario and learn from today’s mistakes. These things happen, but our pit crew work has generally been exceptional this season. We will now stay in Monza for a Pirelli tyre test on Wednesday and then will have a few days to see what lessons we can learn from this weekend, especially regarding the update package. It was meant to come at the next round in Azerbaijan, but a big push at the factory allowed us to bring one set of parts here in Monza, which we chose to run with Yuki. We cannot hide that, even without his penalties, it would have been difficult for Daniel to finish in the points. We crucially need a performance step to return to the front of the midfield, and our focus is on analysing the data collected here before going to Baku.
Haas F1 Team
MoneyGram Haas F1 Team finished with Kevin Magnussen 10th and Nico Hulkenberg 17th at the 2024 Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix, Round 16 of the World Championship, held Sunday at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza.
Magnussen started from 13th on Pirelli P Zero Yellow medium tyres and gained a place on the opening lap before passing Daniel Ricciardo for 11th place during the first stint. Magnussen came into the pits on lap 14 of 53 for hard white tyres. Magnussen collided with Alpine’s Pierre Gasly on lap 19 and was issued a 10-second time penalty, which he carried through the race, cycling through as high as seventh as he executed a one-stop strategy.
Magnussen was ultimately classified in 10th place after the penalty was applied at the checkered flag, collecting one point to bolster the MoneyGram Haas F1 Team’s tally. Unfortunately, Magnussen collected two penalty points for the collision with Gasly, meaning he will now serve a one-race suspension in Azerbaijan, having accumulated a total of 12 maximum penalty points in a 12-month period – resulting in the automatic ban.
Hulkenberg started from 13th on the grid, also on medium tyres, but lost ground on the opening lap after he was hit by Ricciardo, for which the RB driver was penalized. Hulkenberg subsequently collided with Yuki Tsunoda and came into the pits on lap five for Hard tyres and a change of front wing, emerging at the rear of the field. Hulkenberg was issued a 10-second time penalty for the contact, which he served at his second pit stop on lap 32, at which he took on another set of hard tyres. Hulkenberg was classified in 17th place.
Up front, Scuderia Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc claimed victory, the seventh of his career, ahead of McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
MoneyGram Haas F1 Team holds seventh in the Constructors’ Championship, narrowing the gap to sixth-placed RB to six points.
Kevin Magnussen
Ayao Komatsu, Team Principal
It was great to get one point out of this race, particularly Monza – this low downforce circuit – in previous years, we haven’t been competitive, so it’s proved we’re working well as a team to bring a competitive low downforce package. Also with Kevin fighting so hard after he was told he had a penalty, and then creating a 10-second gap to Fernando Alonso, that was amazing, he was close to Albon as well so it was a good fight. On the flip side, we shouldn’t have put Kevin in that position behind Gasly, so again, our execution wasn’t perfect, and we need to improve that. Nico’s race was ruined pretty early on – there was nothing we could do. On the positive side, both drivers said the car was decent, especially the stability, so they could push. Kevin received two penalty points post-race, which means a one-race ban, and they won’t be racing in Baku.
Williams Racing
Williams Racing left the 2024 Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix in Monza with points for the fourth consecutive season after Alex Albon secured a P9 finish at the Temple of Speed.
[bsa_pro_ad_space id=41]Alex Albon
It was a good race and I’m happy. I felt like we did a decent job, whilst also struggling quite a lot with the tyres. The front left was always a problem throughout so I had to manage this, and I couldn’t really stop the graining, which was always a problem for us. In the end, we did a good job of surviving while relying on Kevin’s penalty to get P9. Haas had us beat this weekend on race pace, so we still have some work to do, but with another upgrade to come, hopefully, we can get back into this point-scoring rhythm for the remaining races of the season. Also, well done to Franco on a great race, he did an impressive job on his first weekend in F1.

We tried everything this weekend to cover all possible scenarios. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to score any points. This wasn’t an easy race for anyone, and we need to review and understand which strategy could have been best. We split strategy, and I went for a one-stopper initially, so I stayed out quite long during the first stint, and many other teams did the same. I struggled with the tyres towards the end of the first stint, so maybe Medium-Hard would have worked better in hindsight. On the positive side, there were some solid performance improvements from Friday to Saturday, which we will now need to understand better to stay on top of the issues we were experiencing in Zandvoort. We will go to Baku again in two weeks, where we need to ensure we can return to the points.
Pierre Gasly
It was a long afternoon, and I was very disappointed. I thought we would have more potential in the race than yesterday when we qualified. We had a brake issue yesterday, which we discovered after Qualifying and carried into this afternoon. The car was bouncing a lot, and we lacked grip. We will now regroup and analyse the reasons why we weren’t able to be competitive this weekend compared to Zandvoort. We will understand and review the weekend to return stronger in Baku.
Oliver Oakes – Team Principal
We knew coming into the weekend it would be tough for us to repeat the performance of previous races, fighting in the points, particularly on this specific configuration of the circuit. We split strategies with different starting tyres to give us some flexibility in terms of strategy. Esteban did well in making a one-stop work and extending his first stint, and we tried a two-stop with Pierre. With both cars finishing within six seconds of each other, there was not much more we could have done today. Ultimately, we lacked the pace today to fight for points.
Looking forward to Baku!
Kick Sauber F1 Team
Stake F1 Team KICK Sauber saw improvement at the 2024 Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix, as Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu fought closer to the rest of the pack and finished in 16th and 18th place, respectively.

Valtteri Bottas
It has been a pretty clean, uneventful race for us; we went for a one-stop strategy, starting with the hard compound, as we tried something different and hoped to get lucky with the timing of a potential Safety Car. Unfortunately, that didn’t work out for us, but I think it was good to try it. Looking back at how the race unfolded, I wouldn’t have done anything different: we gained a few track positions, getting to P16 on merit, but that was the most we could do. We haven’t made massive progress in pace. Our weekend started well, but we couldn’t keep up with the momentum or improve much. Still, it has undoubtedly been a better weekend compared to Zandvoort. We have a lot of work ahead of us to make a further step, which is what we’ll be working in the run-up to the next back-to-back in Baku and Singapore.
Zhou Guanyu
Our pace today wasn’t strong enough to fight closer to the points – especially in a smooth race without interruptions or big shocks. While our pace was clearly an improvement over last weekend in Zandvoort, we are on the back foot in terms of performance compared to our direct competitors. This weekend, we’ve seen some improvement in single-lap pace, but it’s clear that we need to find the car’s sweet spot and execute a flawless weekend to get the best possible result. Rather than relying on luck, our team focuses on putting our heads down and continuing to work hard to find those crucial few-tenths of a second that will bring us closer to the top ten.

We could see some positive signs in today’s performance by the team, even though the finishing positions, on paper, don’t look much different from the previous races. Both drivers managed their tyres well, hard and medium alike, allowing us to follow the race strategy we planned before the race, with degradation under control. Of course, this is still not enough to fight for points, as we lack overall pace, but the low-drag package we brought to Monza and the setup changes we made for qualifying improved the car balance and gave Valtteri and Zhou a chance to fight. We still have a long journey ahead of us in the battle for points, but it is essential to acknowledge that the gap with our direct competitors has been reduced today – it’s a positive sign we need to outline.
